U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service (USDA FS)
Core Competencies Employed: IT Governance, Program Management, Business Process Management, Business Activity Management, Network Integration, Systems Engineering, Cyber Security, Service Oriented Architecture, Application Development, Enterprise Architecture, Geographic Information Systems
Read More » The USDA Forest Service was looking to streamline operations across the enterprise and meet OMB Federal Enterprise Architecture mandates. This would mean a comprehensive examination of existing business processes, and then reengineering those processes to more closely align with the organization’s mission. TechTrend worked closely with USDA management to design and implement Lean Six Sigma processes to support various lines of business. Our team helped design and deploy the agency’s enterprise architecture and implement enterprise-wide service oriented architecture standards, along with the use of business process management systems, rules engines, enterprise service buses, and other modern technology platforms. These efforts have brought the USDA FS into compliance with the mandate and also created a more flexible, integrated enterprise. TechTrend successfully reengineered USDA processes for the Grants & Agreement system and for the Paperless-Transactions Processing system. The new more scalable, web-based environment gives senior management in-depth access to underlying business processes and also reducing the associated processing times. USDA FS needed a more efficient and effective way to monitor, update, and alter geographic data across its enterprise. By integrating third party geographic information system solutions into the “i-Web” national application, TechTrend created the first centralized GIS data management at the Forest Service. The new GIS allows FS employees to 1) incorporate data from outside sources using a web service approach, 2) easily update and alter data through the use of an easy-to-use web portal interface, and 3) conduct spatial and temporal queries against a database. TechTrend’s solution has helped FS reduce the amount of time necessary to provide GIS products to employees responsible for monitoring the nation’s forests, and also gives them the ability to model and predict outcomes of natural disasters. |

Federal Aviation Administration
Core Competencies Employed: Data Center Consolidation, IT Governance, Service Oriented Architecture, Enterprise Architecture
To support its safety-driven mission, FAA needs its many critical systems to easily share information. The agency needed to eliminate data silos and provide a mechanism to integrate existing and future systems via a common enterprise service bus. TechTrend experts were brought in to develop, deploy, and establish governance procedures for a service oriented architecture (SOA) environment. Our team of SOA professionals worked with FAA management to separate the enterprise into a collection of service providers and consumers and then grouped them into communities of interests to facilitate information sharing among them. We established standards and guidelines for a SOA framework that the FAA can successfully leverage to gain better return on its IT investments via reusability, services, and standards. Today the FAA is an enterprise of reusable services, and duplicative functionality has been eliminated. The agency is more agile and can easily adapt to changing business requirements. FAA enterprise enjoys technology independence from software vendors, allowing the agency to choose best of breed products for their IT infrastructure. |
